Yakisugi (焼杉) is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. Yaki means to heat with fire, and sugi is cypress.

By slightly charring the surface of the wood without combusting the whole piece, the wood becomes water-proof through carbonisation and is thus more durable. It also protects against insects?and bacteria.

The rich black finish can be seen outside the bowl. With the urethane coating, it is durable and food safe. The shape also makes stacking possible. You can stack multiple pieces together, which is very convenient for storage.?

As the whole piece is handmade in Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
